The incidence and prevalence of spectrum of mental disorders are increasing at a fast rate, and the affected people are presenting with varied presentations. The best thing from the health stakeholders' perspective is that we have effective treatment modalities and strategies in place for the prevention and treatment of these disorders., However, due to lack of social support and shortage of trained health professionals in the rural and remote settings, it makes extremely difficult for the program managers to contain the situation predominantly in low and middle-income nations.,
Ensuring optimal mental health of the people in their workplace has been acknowledged as one of the key priorities, not only because of the fact that workplace have their inherent reasons for the stressors, but also because that presence of such disorders determines sickness absenteeism and directly affects their productivity and eventually the growth of the nation., A wide range of factors has been determined which influence the mental health of employees, namely, lack of communication from management, no or limited involvement of employees in decision-making, working hours, psychological harassment, and poor bonding with the team.,,
Ignorance on the part of promotion of mental health affects people's mental well-being and eventually leads to physical ailments, mental disorders, substance abuse, sickness absenteeism, and other consequences., Another important reason is the monetary perspective, wherein it has been estimated that by investing in a holistic screening program for mental disorders, the rate of returns is almost four times, especially in disorders such as depression, and we can significantly minimize the rates of absenteeism and reduced productivity. From the employers' perspective, the indirect cost linked with reduced productivity or enrolling-cum-training of the replacement employees is extremely high, and the option of promotion of optimal mental health in the workplace is bound to benefit both the employers and employees to a great extent.,
Considering the fact that a great proportion of our waking hours in the adult life is spent at work, it is a must that the working atmosphere is modified accordingly to enable cost efficiency. The good thing is that in Indian settings gradually, it has been acknowledged that mental well-being of employees plays a defining role in the successful growth of the institution and the quality of life, and thus, slowly actions have been taken to promote mental health., The need of the hour is to have the support and involvement of all the international welfare agencies and stakeholders in such a way that comprehensive policies are formulated and implemented in the workplace for ensuring optimal mental well-being.,,
In fact, the presence of holistic guidelines will provide us with the strategies which can aid in the prevention, early detection, and management of mental disorders arising at the workplace. In addition, the employers need to be sensitized about the need and significance of mental well-being at the workplace so that they can invest in the same, in the form of periodic sensitization program for employees and mental health check-up at the time of recruitment, and subsequently on a periodic basis.,,
In conclusion, it is high time that measures are planned and implemented to maintain optimal mental health of the employees at their workplace to ensure better quality of life and higher productivity.
